Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

Title: Ugly Love
Author: Colleen Hoover
Published: August 5th, 2014 by Atria Books.

When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she knows it isn’t love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her. Never ask about the past. Don’t expect a future. They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all. Hearts get infiltrated. Promises get broken. Rules get shattered. Love gets ugly.

My Musings

I am fascinated by the fact that two books from the same genre can be so different at the same time. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it’s just that I read two books that classify as New Adult and I really enjoyed both of them even though they were quite different. I’m talking about Amour Amour and Ugly Love. This time I am going to share my thoughts on the latter, book of the American writer, Colleen Hoover.

You know these kind of agreements, -where two people decide to just have sex-, are going to get messy at some point because someone will eventually end up developing feelings. So when Miles and Tate started this ‘thing’ I kept shaking my head and murmuring ‘oh Tate’ because I was constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop, but Tate proved to be brave and then admirable in my eyes. She would bend at Miles’ will, if he said ‘I only want sex, I won’t ever be ready for a relationship ever again’, she would say 'yes, sure, if that’s what you want'. AND I WANTED TO SLAP HER SOMETIMES. But I think I understood that she was determined to fight for what she wanted. During the majority of the book I would think: ‘If I was her I would have left him already’ or ‘Ohmygod what are you doing, Tate? Don’t go back to him!’

Then later on I realized, she was the only one that didn’t give up on Miles, she was patient and willing to wait for him to tell her the truth. She said 'I know I deserve so much more but I am terrified to lose him for good', and that is such a corageous thing to do.

Miles was such a complicated character, I wish we would have gotten more chapters from his POV, but at the same time I feel that everything worked out perfectly, because we got each characters' perspectives when it was absolutely necessary. I thought, at first, that Miles Archer would be the classic asshole, using women and just looking for sex -once again-, but he was pretty clear about what he wanted and always asked for honesty from Tate, very mature in my opinion. He had a good reason to be scared of love again. When I read what happened to him, I got teary eyed, I'm not going to lie.

The chemistry between the characters is something else, guys. I love and admire authors for being able to construct a relationship from nothing, literally nothing. A blank space and a keyboard in front of them can result in breathtaking scenes. For instance, the sex scenes in this book were so full of passion, lust, angst and just as consuming as a fire. And then I have to mention Miles' chapters from his teenage years, because they were simpy so poetic, and that somehow made them more emotional to me.

I kept imagining everything as a movie and thinking wow these actors better be good because this is great. So, so so moving. The epilogue is one of the most beautiful I have EVER read. You can feel Miles' fear, (I swear I did) and then his relief. The descriptions of the characters' emotions somehow make you feel as if you are watching it all from the background, that is exactly what I felt while reading this. I gave this book 5 stars on goodreads and I very much recommend it. If you want to feel something, this is the book to go for.

Until next time! :)

  1. This is an amazing review!! I'm sooo glad you liked it as I absolutely disliked it.. I gave it 3 stars and I was being EXTREMELY generous with it.. I don't know what it was but Tate just let Miles walk all over her and she had zero self-respect! I don't know.. I'm really glad you did though. Colleen Hoover is one of my fav authors and I love it when people enjoy her books :)♥

One thing that was redeeming was the ending though, I looved Miles as a character even though he walked all over Tate. He was honest and she was the dumb one here. I loved reading from his past and the cover to story correlation was amazing! I honestly teared up because thats not what I expected AT ALL! :) I also reviewed this, I'd love to discuss spoilers, but I can't agh hahahaha ..

OMG I know what you mean about Tate, I was torn between wanting to slap her and hold her because she knew she wanted him, but I felt like she lost herself along the way :( I did love the hot scenes hahaha and Miles' story!!! I also did NOT expect what happened with him and then the epilogue JAY SO AMAZING OMG. kajndksndakjdbsdkjba I loved it, and that rarely happens.

  2. Oh, goodness! I have mainly seen mixed reviews for this one, so it's nice to read a really positive review for it. I've been interested in reading it for a while, because I'm really intrigued by the epilogue and what happened to Miles. A lot of people have mentioned how heartbreaking it is.

I really like NA, even though I haven't read a lot of it. So I think the next time I am need for something other than YA I will give this one a go!

    Lovely review, Alejandra ^.^

  3. I've never read anything by Colleen Hoover, but I've heard SOOOO many good things about her writing. Ugly Love doesn't really appeal to me from the synopsis - I'm not a lover of anything romance related because awkward relationships tend to stress me out (do you not put yourself in her situation and just want to CRY??) I will definitely be trying this in the future!

    1. You have to read stuff by Colleen Hoover, OMG! Her writing is so incredible! And ugh I knew I would cringe because of the kind of relationship the book would have because you know things are bound to get complicated but I'm a masochist? Lol

Thank you SO much for commenting, Beth :)
